Advanced mathematics is one of the greatest achievements of the human mind. It is even more remarkable, that the abstract mathematics of the 18th and 19th centuries has been found to be capable of describing a vast range of natural phenomena: such as the large-scale structure of the Universe, the nature of spacetime, the lifecycles of stars and galaxies, and the mysterious quantum behaviour of subatomic particles. In fact, once established, mathematical models often define what is meant by ‘truth’ and ‘reality’.
In this talk, Stafford will give an insight into the profound world of fundamental physics, with examples taken from astrophysics and quantum physics. He will describe some of the extraordinary ground-based and space-based telescopes and instruments that are being used to explore the nature of the Universe at its most fundamental level. Examples will be given where scientists are striving to make sense of unexplained, often highly counterintuitive behaviour.
This is a popular talk, and no knowledge of physics or mathematics is required. Concepts will be explained in a way that will enable people without any scientific knowledge to gain an insight into the extraordinary and often shocking world of fundamental physics. Questions from the floor will be strongly encouraged. The event is suitable for all ages from about 14 years upwards, but children must be accompanied by an adult.
The doors open at 6.30pm and the talk starts at 7.00pm on Sat 30th Jan 2027. The talk is free, and tickets are NOT required. In order to enable numbers to be monitored, however, it would be appreciated if you could, if possible, send a short email to darkpeakscience@gmail.com indicating the number of people in your party.
